I moved into my house 5 years ago that had existing Ademco sec system. The chime everytime we opened doors was driving us nuts, so I unplugged system at keypad. 5 years later I now have a smartass teenager who thinks its fun sneaking out in the middle of the night. Its time to become armed and dangerous AGAIN!!! Any tips from teenage parents will be helpful!!!!:wall:

Anyway, I think my batterry is dead. It is a Rocket ES4-12 (by Yuasa Battery CV) rechargeable sealed lead battery. I plugged it back in, and get nothing! I removed the battery from the control box in the basement. How do I test? Do I need a special charger?? Can I charge w my car charger??????

Or will the system recharge battery since I plugged in at contol panel ?

Any advise will help !!!!!

Thanks,
Paul

Sealed lead acid batteries lose their ability to take and hold a charge when left off of the trickle charger for more than a few months.

Replace the battery.

If you unplugged the _keypad_ and not the transformer that supplies 16vac power to the system, you need to reconnect the keypad. It is possible that the transformer has failed in the intervening time.

Thanks for quick reply. It seems the battery is just for backup????? Shouldn't I be getting AC power as soon as I plugged in keypad??

What do u suggest?

Find the transformer. It's generally going to be in an outlet nearby. If you aren't getting 16vac at the first two terminals on the system motherboard, then either the transformer has failed, been unlplugged, or the outlet doesn't have power, or one of the wires isn't connected to the transfrormer.

In general, no, most alarm systems will not start up on battery power alone.

I checked and cannot seem to locate the transformer in any outlets nearby. I have a multimeter to ck the first two terminals and get zero reading. I set meter to 200 ACV setting. Is this correct? Can I test my battery with my meter??? I have Cen-Tech P30756 multimeter. What should I set it at to test my battery????

Where would the transformer wire connect in the box??? I assume on the motherboard. I wll ck to see if there are any other plugs in my storage room where the control box is located.

Thanks!:madhell:

90% of the time, the transformer is plugged into an outlet on an adjoining wall to the one the system enclosure is mounted to. Sometimes, the transformer is located just inside of the attic access.

In the course of 4-5 years, it is quite possible that you or someone working in your house removed the transformer from it's outlet, and tucked the wire in behind the outlet plate (possibly when painting) not knowing what it was for. Or, it could be behind a large piece of furniture that you never move.

_There is no standard location for these things_. Sadly, there is no short cut for going over the house with a flashlight and looking at all of your outlets. You are looking for a black, beige or grey cube that covers half of an outlet. Rarely, some older systems like this one did use the same type of transformer that door bells use (normally in the attic or near the breaker panel)

Sure you can check the battery with a meter. It's a DC voltage source, and when fully charged should hold 12.5-13.5VDC with a light load (like a light bulb). Reading a battery without a load is meaningless, for the most part.

(The first two terminals are where the 16vac transformer connects to supply power...)

Well I found the transformer plugged in to the outlet clear on the other end of the house in the same outlet as my sump pump. I unplugged it thinking it was an alarm in case the pump failed, which it did, and no alarm, so i figured a wire was broken on it and just unplugged it like a dummy.

Anyway, thanks for the tips, you got me thinking!!!!

Now I have AC power and no codes. Thats the next step!!!

I will search the site for info on codes.

Thanks again for your help Ron!!! Beer 4U2

Ok, I read the sticky you posted and was able to retrieve the master codes in loc #20. I downloaded the manual from the ademco website and can now begin to program.

Lets see what I can manage to figure out!!!!!

Thanks,
