I have a roof-mount attic exhaust fan that recently quit. I want to replace it with a Master Flow Power Roof Vent (1000cfm) that is available from Home Depot. I however lack the expertise or time to do it myself.

I'm not sure whether the new fan is an exact dimensional replacement for the old one, and it appears the Master Flow is a unit that includes fan, exterior housing/cover, and flashing. So do I need a roofing pro to install the new fan in the roof and ensure it is sealed properly, and then an electrician to hook up the wires?

or should i call my HVAC guy?

I know you think you should replace it because the motor is bad, but the new one will have a life span just as short, if even that long. These motorized exhaust fans are IMO a waste of good money. Passive ventilation is the best way to go. I would call a roofing guy out and have him remove the fan, patch the hole and reroof the area, then install a ridge vent across the top of the peak of your house. That way you will be assured of removing all the hot air in the attic, using no electricity, and not having to worry about if your fan is working or not. Remember opinions are like bellybuttons....everyone has one, so if you are determined to have the fan, almost any of the trades you mentioned could perform the work. Just call them and see if they do it and what it would cost. I'd call the roofer first to see the difference in cost of the fan and ridge venting system.

i once read an article that you shouldnt have a ridge vent and an attic fan. Is this true and if so, why? Only thing i can think of is the fan would draw warm air in thru the vent instead of letting it flow out naturally. Thus making more work for itself. However, i have such a large attic i cant believe it would really work this way.

for the record, the house i bought has both.

I believe it was on "This Old House" I saw a piece on air conditioning an unfinished attic would actually save you more on the overall cost then ventilation. Sounds counter intuitive I know but they claimed to have the figures to prove it worked.

Get a roofer to install a fan if you decide to replace. We can walk you through hooking it up.
