Hello DIYers!
I have a Fujitsu Halcyon ductless A/C unit (four years old) that has been driving me crazy pretty much since it was installed. When it's on Cool mode (i.e., when the A/C is running), the wall unity makes a buzzing sound every seven to 30 seconds, depending I suppose on the relative heat/humidity inside the apartment (really a guess). The buzz lasts about three seconds, just long and loud enough to keep me and my wife awake while trying to sleep. We live in a loft-style apartment - sound travels pretty easily. Often it won't occur right away, but will kick in once the A/C has been on for a while (30-60 minutes, perhaps).
I've tried searching for this issue on this board and elsewhere online and can't seem to put my finger on it. My hunch is that the motor (compressor? Engine?) is not properly seated, and vibrates against another part when it moves. I called the company that installed most of the units in my building but they were useless. Said nothing could be done and that they'd be happy to punch a hole in my wall but wouldn't close it up (and that, again, nothing could be done).
My questions are twofold:
(1) Does anyone have any idea what I'm referring to or any experience with this kind of problem?
(2) Any idea what to do about it? I lack the ability to actually open the unit up and fix whatever the problem might be, but I was hoping an online assisted diagnosis might make it easier to deal with a repair. As a corollary, if anyone has any experience with a climate repair team in Montreal, I'd appreciate any info.
Thanks so much!
JB
PS: I should add that the unit works fine. It cools off our apartment very quickly, the fan is quiet, it doesn't leak, etc. Just this crazy, annoying noise.

I don't know if you've fixed it but I've been having the same problem. My unit is a 3 year old Mitsubishi and it started making the same noise you described. Mine is quite high and I finally got up on a ladder to have a look. It is the water pump making the noise in my case. It seemed like it was pumping a little too much water out. I undid a screw and angled the pump slightly and problem solved.
