I don't know how to diy, but I had a tub professionally refinished a few years ago and I'm very satisfied. Permaglaze is a national franchise/chain, I think they're the big name in the industry, although I happened to use someone else (local guy with good references). They basically do some light sanding of the old finish, patch any bad spots, and then spray on a new finish -- pretty much like urethane car paint, if I'm not mistaken. Mine has held up very well.

You may get a few years if you have it professionally done. Its really not a diy job and you won't be happy with the results.
