What is the cheapest an most effective way to properly care for hot tub water?

We've had our tub for about four years . As far as chems. go, all we have ever done is to make sure to keep three one inch bromine tabs in a small chem. floater. and try to always use the same trunks/shorts for the tub only.
We discovered that even the trace amounts of laundry detergent left from the washing machine became a problem in the warm agitating water, as you can imagine...
