Recheck the model #. If the machine is the age you describe, it does not have a belt, it is a direct drive model. It sounds like the machine isn't draining? If so, check the pump. To gain access, remove the screws holding the console down [there's one at each end of the front of the console, you might have to remove the plastic end caps to see them] , flip the console up, pop those funky looking clips, disconnect the lid switch, tilt the cabinet forward and up.

Changing a belt is easy, once you have done a couple on different machines. They usually have something in common: You have to get off the water pump so you can get the belt to not only go around the pump pulley, but to get it inbetween the correct pump mounting posts (3).

First you look at how the belt is currently routed. If the belt is broke and off, then you have to guess based on visual geometry -the size of each pulley, and how the tensioner may draw the right side of the belt toward the left.

Was the last one I changed a Whirlpool, about 2 weeks ago? Maybe. I'm trying to think. On that one, I unplugged the electric cord, opened the front panel, and then disconnected the water pump 2 black hoses, and then unscrewed 4 screw-bolts that hold the entire motor and pump assembly on. Then I pulled out the whole works some, turned it upside down or at least sideways (you are limited to how far out you can come do to the connected motor wires), and used an allen wrench to undo the 3 allen screws that are inside the water pump mounting posts, and slid off the pump, then put on the belt on the water pump pulley and made sure I was around the correct posts! If you do not put them around the correct water pump posts and you reinstall and it is wrong, you might get very angry! Take it from me! :D

If you are at all mechanically inclined, because that is what many mechanical jobs really require is a mechanical aptitude and common sense, - it is a very doable job when you have never done one before. It will just take you longer the first time.

Another tip is that you can unhook the tensioner spring that holds the tensioner pulley. The belt always winds around any tensioner pulley so that the flat side of the belt is on the tensioner pulley, not the v-side of the belt! Then after you have everything looped correctly, THEN rehook up that spring.
