I have a stainless steel commercial mini fridge that's about 3'x3'x3' sitting in my garage collecting dust. I was thinking of putting it outside to serve as a nice counter for an "outdoor kitchen". My question is what should I do to prep it for some tile. I'm assuming that I can't just throw tile on and that I probably have to glue some plywood down first.

No, there's more to it than that. You have to screw, not glue, min. 5/8" exterior grade plywood. (not PT) Then install a cement backer that is suitable for exterior use. Thinset mortar and screwed to the ply. Durock, Wonderboard, others.....Not Hardie. Then you'll need to waterproof the cement board. Either Ditra or a similar membrane or a liquid membrane such as RedGuard or HydroBand.

Now the easy part, thinset the tiles down, grout the next day.
