Has anyone ever used self stick vinyl floor tiles to cover old laminate countertop? I have a friend that suggested this could be done.

That sounds like bad advice to me! The stick on flooring's cracks will never be a good seal for water and will catch dirt. I have never been a fan of them even for flooring.

Hi STurbide, welcome to DIY

As a general rule, I'd agree with Tolyn Ironhand, however, you are not describing if this laminate counter is a kitchen counter, or a workshop counter or ... ?

Are there inflammable products on the counter? heat?

perhaps with more information we can provide a better advice

I think it would be a mistake, too. You're better off buying a new laminate -- they have some patterns that look like granite and other stones-- or some people paint laminate countertops, although I'm not sure how long it lasts. I just saw a post on thriftyfun and they had some cool countertops.

Allison,

As is stated in the disclaimer of the website you are linking, the advice is not provided by experts, but by users. So, I'd be very careful with this.
You can't effectively and safely paint a material intended to be waterproof

I don't think this a good idea. The grooves between the tiles would not be sealed and eventually the moisture will get between and it will start peeling.
