I've done it. You can apply a household/plumbing sealant from below, that will dry like a tough caulk, and stop the leak. It holds up fine. You can find such products at hardware stores or home centers.

Epoxy putty that comes in that tootsie roll form that you knead, should also do the trick. Neat stuff.
I used the stuff today on a tub/shower job I did, where the shower arm was flopping around in the wall (drop ear L not attached to nothing), and someone had cleverly jury rigged a metal tab with bailing wire so that it could not shove back in the wall. But I used almost a whole epoxy stick and forced it IN the hole and on the OUTSIDE, to lock the shower arm in place. It set completely hard, in a few minutes!

J&B Weld will work very well also.
