How can I get the smell of mildew and "earthy old wood" out of an old small house. I'm afraid to steam clean it, because I don't want to introduce moisture. There is no humidity-but the smell has always been there.

You have to have water or high RH for mold. you are in a green grass state so a dehumidifier would be the 1st thing I would get.

Dehumidifier to dry it out and lots of ventilation to help expedite the removal of the odor. I don't use these myself as they put oil into the air, but I've seen tenants hide some nasty odors by using those air fresheners you plug into an electical outlet - might help while you're getting the musty odor out.
