Hi, I had a sliding patio door installed recently, but I still have about 1/2 inch of the 2 by 4 showing on the inside. How would I finish it out. I assume I need a jamb extension, but I only have about 1/2 inch to attach an extension to. I took a picture showing a closeup of it. I would appreciate any suggestion or comments Thx.

I'd like to know what the edge is that shows at the far left. And is that jamb white vinyl?

The edge at the far left is the drywall. The jamb is white vinyl. It is a Pella Thermastar Sliding Patio door.

You are correct, you need a jamb extension and although you don't have much to nail to, it should be enough. Shim and nail your jamb extension into the framing, then when you install your casing, nail that into your jamb extension and the framing. This should hold everything together securely.

We have rentals with sliding doors and now my memory is tested and I am going to see how they did them. I do know that they are cased. That I do know.
On a rental mobile home we have that has one, they did not worry about extensions on the aluminum jamb that fell short, and the 2 x 4 was simply paneled. So there was no smooth full 6 inch, or whatever jamb, including extension. It simply was like 3 1/2 inch jamb that fell an inch short of the inside wall, and they just paneled the 2 x 4 and put outside corner or casing at the corner (can't remember).
When I have done similar extensions, in carpentry work (which I don't do a heck a lot of anymore as I have gravitated more to techy fix-it stuff), I have actually sandwiched in caulk and wiped off excess to better hide the joint and make a better seal.
