Is it possible to build an electric generator that runs off of electricity? It would seem to me that if you used an electric motor to run your generator, and at the same time use your generator to power it, thus powering itself. Wouldn't this work, and if not why? I am pretty novice here, but I was hoping I could get help understanding this more.
thank you

I'm certainly no expert but it has always been my understanding that man has yet to be able to build any type of motor that produces more energy than it consumes.

Isn't that what converters, alternators and things like that for? If a little 9v battery can be put into something(a tazer) that can knock a person on their butt, I don't see why this couldn't be done?

People have been trying to do it for centuries. Nice dream, never happen. Beer 4U2

A guy (some kook?) actually called up this national talk radio show (The Dennis Miller Show) the other day, to say that people do not realize that you can power your house with magnets, and the power companies do not want you to learn about that secret. That one of these devices can power like 5000 houses for absolutely free. Dennis countered that the power companies do not have that kind of power to stymie such (real)inventions, contrary to conspiracy theories to the contrary, - and such devices would exist if really possible. He was polite to the guy, but sort of just politely made him disappear off the airwaves.

Well, If you can run a Chevy S10 with an electric motor , and some batteries, I don't see why you can't use that same motor to run a generator, and an alternator to keep the batteries charged, and help power the generator.

It's all about conservation of energy...it just can't happen. Thats why all electric vehicles either need to be recharged from a power source, or they use a gas engine of some sort to drive a generator to recharge the batteries when required.
Of course you could use an electric motor to drive a generator..if the motor was fed from a different power source. You have friction losses, line losses, etc.
You can probably find any number of websites that say its possible...all you have to do is violate the basic laws of physics.

:D Exactly! LOL. Circular logic.

Perpetual motion energy machines goes even one step further, and actually PRODUCES enough power from itself to actually POWER something else. Not just to sustain the piece doing the turning (i.e. drinking bird).

trying to create something out of nothing...?
as for this case, it's impossible... you cannot have any output which is more than input... considering all the electrical and mechanical losses

Converters/inveters/trandormers, and the electronics in a Taser do not make more power, they only change the incoming voltage to the voltage going out, but maintain almost the same power (some is lost though).
