We just moved into our new home and would like to arm our system at night (unmonitered). The previous owner bought our home as an investment and never lived in it and does not know the code. We have tried 1234, including * and # before and after, 0000, and many more... but to no avail. How can we reset to a new code when we do not know the previous code?

NX-1448E is the keypad model; you have a NX-4, NX-6, NX-8, NX-8e or the V2 models of one of the above. (check the wiring diagram on the inside of the door of the system cabinet.)
In any case, try entering *8 9713 if the panel beeps and goes into programming mode, press the exit key until you are out of programming (be careful, if you press too many times, you will arm the system and then you are truely stuck. You should need to press the key about twice as most)
If it doesn't go into programming, then realistically the only way to reset the master code is with the direct connect module (nx-588) and a copy of the DL-900 software.

entered the code, panel did not beep but was prompting me to enter code - should I have tried the exit key anyway?

I entered the code you suggested, the panel did not beep but was prompting me to "enter code" - should I have tried the exit key anyway

Nope, if it didn't ask for the module number to program, then the installer code has been changed from the default.
You either need someone with the direct connect module and the software to extract/change the code to one of your choice, or you need the module and the software yourself.
You _can_ try some educated guesses. Installers often use codes like the last 4 digits of their business phone, business address, business license number; or even the location address.
