Hi, All--

First post: please be gentle! :-)

I've been reading your instructions about laying clay pavers, and I have heard, loud and clear, the proper instructions for laying them, and the difficulties of pavers without spacers or chamfered edges. I really have read a lot of these in the forum, so here's my situation:

I'm creating garden paths in a very small back yard. I'm in Cleveland, and I've already purchased the clay pavers.

I have also purchased some "accent" concrete pavers, which are slightly thinner than the pavers.

I am going for a "charming" sort of disorder, rather than a super-fine alignment that all the proper techniques would achieve.

1. Can I get away without a road base layer, if I tamp the soil well, then put sand on top of that?

2. Is there a way to make my pavers work together, even though the accent pieces are thinner? I'm planning to run them up the center of the path.

Should I just bit the bullet and follow all the prescriptions, buy all the right material, etc?

My dad helped us with a very small flagstone path in the front yard, and as I recall, we just used sand, and it's doing fine.

What do you think?
