Hi. I have a teak kitchen set that I really don't like the colour of. It is the typical orangey coloured teak, and I really want it to be a dark colour. No idea if it is solid teak or veneer...

Any suggestions on staining it? I would like to maybe use a dark walnut oil, and am hoping to just apply it directly, without having to do any sanding.

Has anyone ever stained teak furniture a dark colour? How did it turn out?

Could I just buy a water-based stain? or would it have to be an oil-based stain? Also, would it be best to buy that gel type or the type you just apply with a brush?

Thanks for any advice you can offer.

Teak is an inherently oily wood. I'd use an oil based stain. If you're going for an exceptionally dark color the gel stains will be more suitable for your project.

Thanks for the reply.

I think I'll try a little dab (oil based) on the underside, and hopefully it'll work without doing any sanding. Thanks again.
