I have been through the FAQ and was able to pull the installer code from the panel.

I pulled this panel from my old home and wish to replace the non working brinks panel in the home I just moved into.

The FAQ says I need a 6139, 6160 or equivalent keypad to install the panel.

I have a 6150 keypad and a 6270 touch screen, would either of those be considered an equivalent or do I need to purchase another keypad just to install this thing?

Thanks for your help

Once you have the system up and running, you can use the 6270 in console mode to do the menu mode programming.

Just be aware that the response time with this configuration is going to be much slower, so you have to be patient with it.

Thanks for the reply...

What do you mean once it is up and running?

If I default the panel can I get by with this? Or would you recommend I just reconfigure the existing zones that need to be changed.

For example zone 1 was smokes which I no longer have so I wanted to change it to a entry door with delay, other then that I think I just need to delete zones 7 and 8 since the Brinks panel was a 6 zone.

Once you have the system powered up and running.

If you are comfortable with the programming system, just change the things you need to change.

Mr Ron
I am brand new to this so I am flying by the seat of my pants. I just found links to the installer manual so I am doing a bit of reading.

What is required to program it with the compass software? How would I connect the panel locally to a pc?

Thank you again for your help and patience with a NOOB!

Honestly, the compass software won't give you any significant advantage. You still have to understand the fundamentals, _and_ it's not the easiest software to get working.

You can program it easily enough. Just give the manual a good read. You will need to refer to it a lot as you go. There is nothing intuitive about this stuff.

This is one of the most common systems around, there are a ton of posts archived here and on other forums.

I was getting the same impression about the software reading through the posts here. Seems like even connecting to the panel with it is a trick.

Thanks again for your help I am gonna play around with it a bit today.

MrRon,

Sorry one more question I just thought of. This 20p panel is easily 6 or 7 years old. Is there any benifit to replacing it with a new 20p or are the old and new the same?

The only possible functional difference is that the later versions of the 20p allowed 4 touch screen devices instead of 2. If the hardware is functional, stick with it.

I am re-programing my vista 20p and am not sure about the zone types.

All of my door and door and window zones seem to be type 2 entry/exit. I understand the doors because there is a delay, shouldn't the windows be type 3 perimeter so that they are instant?

Also my Motion is type 10 interior w/delay, I guess that must be the technical term for motion.

Thanks for the help

You are kinda over-complicating things.

Entry/exit doors that you want to be delayed should be zone type 01; motion detectors should be zone type 04 (interior follower), and everything else should be type 03 (perimeter). The other zone types have their uses, but those are the basic ones (As you may have noticed, those are the zones at the start of the list. The others have their purposes, but are not the first choice for a typical residential setup)

The reason you choose interior type zones for motions is so that you can turn on the chimes without them going off everytime someone walks by.

Thank you Ron,

This panel was initally installed by ADT I moved the panel and went to re-program it and those zone types are what was there. It did not sound exactly right thats why I asked.

Now all I have to do is locate 2k resistors, I thought radioshack would carry them but no dice.

*****Fixed*****

Nevermind I had NC and C crossed.

********

Ok one last issue I think.

I have everything working except for the motion, have red and black going to power and ground. Resistor on green yellow is common.

The light on the motion is on steady and shows a fault on the keypad.

This motion is from a brinks system do I maybe need to eliminate the resistor on it?

Thank you,

John

If the motion is staying activated, then something is wrong. Either your wiring is incorrect, or the motion itself has a problem.

As long as the resistor in question is a 2k ohm, then your wiring, as described, should be correct.

I had the resistor on the common instead of the NC, seemed to make a difference, it works now.

Thank you for your help!!
