All of a sudden, the hot water faucet in my bathroom got very difficult to turn on or off. In fact, when I turn the hot water handle, the base of the handle moves with it.

There is a screw that is accessible from the top of the handle...should I loosen that a bit? I just have visions of me doing that and a shoot of water squirting me in the face!

Any help would be appreciated!

That screw is just to remove the handle. You can remove the screw & the handle without getting water in your face. It sounds like the problem is in the stem. Shut the valve under the sink if you remove it.

Remove the stem and do a full rebuild, make sure you use grease (non-petroleum) that's is safe to be in contact with potable water.
