I'm building a surrounding structure for my bathtub and want to make it just like this picture, my question is what kind of material was used to make the front of the bath structure (the panel with the litte moldings). I'm sure it's wood, but want kind of wood was used? What kind of wood should I use in a bathroom?

The type of wood is less critical than the finish - which is what protects it from a high humidity environment.
It looks like the decorative trim edging the panels is base cap or something similar. Look around the molding area and you'll find something you can use that only needs to be cut to fit. The panel itself is inset so the trim is flush with the face.

I actually saw one very similar made from a cabinet door. It was held with some sort of catch and was removable. Not sure if it was access for the motor and such or just storage.

It was most likely made from either MDF or Poplar...my bet MDF. Both take paint readily and smoothly without grain raising.

I wouldn't, but that wasn't the question. I would opt for poplar or other low grain wood.

There are also composites(Vinyl or vinyl compounds) that work very well in bathroom enviornments.
