these are two fans with ligths. they both stop working about the same time . they are in the kitchen and living room and on different circuts. the fan in the living room was on a switch that two push buttons one fan and one lights. replace it with a single pole switch to see if the fan would work. the fan made that sound when you change the speed or light brightness. pull on the change but the fan didn't do nothing.
with the fan making the sound . is the fan getting power and if getting power is it tne fan? the other one act about the same. the only deference is that one of the switch , the top half i guess you can say [ i think it's the fan] seem like it got hot and melt that part of the switch . the other half was good.
[a] did the fan cause that top half to melt
[b] that sound you get when push on bottons is the fan getting power and why it does not work even with the pull change
[c] would new switchs and fans or could it be just one of the two
i'm sorry don't know the name of the switches ,but they are square body with two push buttons and one in the middle to turn the switch off. i'm sure they are hunters not top of the line, but are not to bad.

It sounds as if you have a lifted neutral. Do you have the expertise to open the circuit breaker box and check things? If not, please call an electrician to do that. While we wait, kill the circuits (both of them) and pull the switches from the wall. Determine if the neutrals run through it. If so, make sure they are pigtailed securely. Next, check all the connections in the fan bells to make sure they are secure.

I agree with chandler, sometimes though when you lose a neutral it has a tendency to fry things such as ceiling fans. Make sure the problem gets fixed, but it may be to late for the ceiling fans.
