I have a 2003 craftsman with a briggs & stratton 17.5 hp, model #31c707. The mower stalled on me one afternoon would I was close to finishing my mowing. I checked the air filter and noticed fuel so I thought carb problem. I took the carb apart and cleaned it well. When I put it back on the mower started but didnt run with the same power. When I put it in a high gear it acted like it wanted to stall. Same when I engage the blades. What should I check next. Thanks for any info.

You may need to post the type and serial # in order to identify your carb...walbro or nikki
did you remove any jets or nozzles during cleaning the carb?

When it stalled for the first time(while mowing) I noticed a small amount of smoke, but none since I started working on it.

Is there gas in the intake again? Did you remove the carb? Maybe you have a linkage connected wrong?

no more gas in the intake. I can get it started but it doesnt run strong. If I put it in a high gear or engage the blades it wants to stall. Does this sound like a fuel starvation problem? Also, I know the seat switch is bad. Im having to compress the button on the switch so I can take my foot off the clutch/brake to leave the mower running.

Make sure it's running on 2 cylinders... Maybe one of the plugs went south on you.. Have you checked for spark on both cylinders???? Maybe just for goofs,, Thro a set of plugs in it,,, Just a thought...Roger
