When applying tar to the foundation is it better to use the brush or a large putty knife? Is there a required thickness needed when applying the tar?

Our guys put it on using a mop and a bucket full of heated tar, then a layer of builder's felt. Some use a stiff brush. But a putty knife won't work. Neither will putting it on cold.

The few times that I was stuck having to apply foundation tar, I used a roller. You need to apply it liberally. It has to fill every pore leaving no thin or missing areas for water to try to go thru.
..... oh ya... you want to wear old [disposable] clothes and a bucket of thinner to take a bath in:eek:

Thank you for the information. I ended up using a 5" paint brush and it worked great (2 brushes actually). the roller brush didn't work as well as i was hoping. the roller kept coming off the handle and would slide instead of roll. when i do the other side of the house i will try the mop method.
Thank you again
