We had granite countertops installed about 4 years ago. Recently, we noticed a small (3") hairline crack originating where the dishwasher is screwed into the countertop. The installer is no longer in business. The crack doesn't appear to be getting larger. Is there anything we can do to repair the crack and ensure that it won't get larger?

Call in a countertop specialist. If granite acts any way like metal does when cracking, they will need to drill small stress relief holes then fill the crack with an color matching epoxy.

Also try to get the dishwasher fastened without screws penetrating the granite. Every time you open the door & pull out the top rack you're putting stress on the top, so, assuming the other side is fastened the same way, it could happen there, also. There are perforated steel plates with a nut brazed on which are epoxied to the bottom of the countertop, then the dishwasher is fastened with a short machine screw. The crack can be filled with an acrylic super penetrating filler, such as Akemi brand. Good luck
