I don't have "hardwood stairs", just the normal material builders use. The carpeting is worn and must be removed. Is it possible to sand and finish the stairs and then apply polyeurathane?

Generally when stairs have carpet the builder doesn't spend the money for oak treads. Instead either pine 2xs or plywood is used. It could be sanded and poly applied but it won't look near as nice as the hardwood. It also isn't fitted as tight since the carpenter knew the stairs would be covered with carpet.

In addition you will have a kazillion holes in it from staples and tacks where the carpet was attached. I would opt for the new oak treads. How do the risers look?

Yes, it's possible. You may want to stain them to help hide the wood filler others have mentioned. Recycling is GREEN. Be safe, G

Thanks for the replies/advice. I haven't removed the carpet yet so I don't know what condition the risers are in. Based on what you've all said, I think I'll go forward and rip out the carpet then buy/install oak treads. Thanks again.

I know you'll be back when you start this installation, but I wanted to caution you not to cut the treads perfectly square, as the opening they will be fitting may not be square. Measure the back and front of the opening carefully, lay a framing square against the riser to see which one is out of square and make your cuts accordingly. Smooth job.

....and depending how the stairs were built you may need to replace the risers too. If you prime and apply 1 coat of enamel on the risers before installing the treads - it will be a little easier :D
