i was out of town sunday and monday..i watered saturday evening and noticed nothing unusual..when i got home monday evening, there were hundreds of japanese beetles on my 10 roses and the damage was serious..i looked on the net and decided to try the soapy water trick and bag-a-bug..i killed a bunch by knocking them off my roses into the bucket of soapy water..i then put a bag a bug on one corner of my lot, away from most of my plants and it has gotten quite a few, as well..
the bag-a-bug says to empty it frequently because the stench of the dead beetles will keep the beetles away from the trap..when i read that, i remembered hearing some years ago that crushing up a bunch of dead insect pests after they are stinking and, in solution, spraying the rotten remains on your plants will keep beetles away..any truth to that?..i've got plenty of beetle carcasses..if not, i'm considering using bayer advantage that sytemic fungicide/pesticide/fertilizer which is applied to the base of the plant and supposedly works well..these voracious pests have really hit me hard.

Hi Jack,
Sorry to read about your 'invasion'. Not to doubt you, but it seems a bit early for Japanese beetles. Could you be seeing the Asiatic garden beetle?

I don't use or recommend the products you mentioned, but here's some organic ways to deal with Japanese beetles.

If you are going to treat your lawn for the grubs, treat in the fall.
