Gardening and Horticulture - Concrete scraps as garden paths

I get conflicting information about the ease/difficulty of using irregular shaped concrete scraps (i.e. from demo'd walkways to lay garden paths from gardening articles and nursery staff. So I'd like to hear from someone who's done it as to how easy or difficult it is. If it is doable, what is the best technique? Can you get a relatively level path? And is it any easier or harder than laying flagstones? I'm trying to capitalize on a friend's throwaway concrete walkway once she demos her lot, but I don't want to go through the expense of carting concrete back to my house if it's not worth it.

I love to use broken concrete. You need to dig out and down to the depth of the concrete plus two or three inches of sand. Fabric cloth is a good idea. Then, put your pieces in the sand and adjust the level with a straight board. Fill in the cracks with sand. I did make a short walkway with flat rocks by just digging out enough for the rock. But the grass tends to grow in and over it.
