Hello.

I'm wanting to build a simple paver patio in my backyard for sitting around with some lawn furniture, nothing too heavy. Problem is (like most DIY) that I'm on a budget.

My area is as follows.

Near my house, but has a very very gentle slope away and into the center of my yard.

Soil is VERY hard sand under the sod, my house was a potato farm 10 years ago and it's basically nothing but sand under the sod that was laid down. It's so hard that I have bent the metal part of shovels just trying to break the surface. If I manage to dig a small hole I need a rock or something metallic to scrape away any dirt from the sides.

House is in Minnesota, thus getting rain/snow.

Question is, with this type of base do I need to dig it up and lay down stone and sand? Or can I just cut the sod out, level it and lay pavers down?

Thank you.
