This problem started last summer and is happening again. I have a cathedral ceiling in my family room. On the outside of the family room at the highest point, my eaves meets my brick chimney. There are bats hanging on the brick of the chimney under the eaves. This area is surrounded by my deck and bats and making a mess on my deck. Each morning I have a pile of bat droppings.
Most info I have read on the internet address bats INSIDE an attic. These are just hanging out on my chimney a few hours each night/early morning. I have no idea how to get them to move on! Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Well...found a few things you might try.....
Bats In Buildings (http://www.batcon.org/index.php/education/bats-and-the-public/bats-in-buildings/subcategory/70.html)
Bats Roosting on Porches at Night
Bats sometimes roost on porches or under overhangs briefly during the night while they digest the insects they have eaten. Non-toxic aerosol dog or cat repellents may be used to discourage bats from roosting in these areas. The spray should be applied by day when bats are not present (Aerosol repellents are not an adequate substitute for exclusion in the case of day roosts and should never be applied when bats are in a roost.) Mylar balloons or strips of aluminum foil hung from the porch ceiling and allowed to move in the breeze may also discourage bats from roosting in that area.
Also I saw several places that mentioned shining a bright light on the area 24 hrs a day for several weeks. Maybe one of those spotlights on a lawn spike?

The bats are very beneficial, so don't kill them, please. You can find plans for simple bat boxes online. I would suggest building one or two and placing them away from the house in sight of the roof peak you refer to. They may take up there. I have a couple on my property and they surely do their job.
