I live in a 1920s center hall colonial in Westchester County, NY and there is a small hole (approx. 1 inch diameter) in the center of the dining room hardwood floor with a round metal (brass) insert. It appears it was designed that way.

Any idea about the reason for the opening?

Could have been for a rotating lazy susan type fixture. Can you post a picture of it on a site such as photobucket.com and copy/paste the HTML code to your reply post?

My guess would be an electrical outlet cover plate, single outlet. As suggested, a pic would help.
