my wife would like to have the slider open from the other side, is it possible to invert panes to accomplish this.

Depends somewhat on the brand. Easy way to tell is remove the sliding panel and see if there is a place for the wheels on the top. You might also be able to just look for holes for adjusting the height similar to the ones at the bottom.

Some doors keep the wheels in the same location and have covers for the handle and latch mechanism on the side not being used. I believe Andersen does it that way.
