Let me start off by saying i have read so many posts on this site and others and hoping i can get some help from people.

This past Saturday night/Sunday Early AM i heard some scratching, crawling, mild thump kind of noise in my outside wall and/or ceiling. It was still there on Sunday at 6am when i went outside to check things out, in the afternoon when i left, then got a bit more quiet when i got home, like it was stuck and got tired.

The problem is that the thing was still making noise off and on on Monday but mostly at night, and yesterday (Tuesday) didnt make noise that i heard or my wife heard until 1am this morning.

It seems to be in the same general area of about 1-2 feet wide and seems to be on the back wall. I put a link to the bedroom below. The noise is coming from roughly above the window, maybe a few inches to the right but above the bookcase also, on the outside wall ( i think).

What should i do. As you can see from the far right wall that it is a cap code and i have no attic access there as the difference from the ceiling to the roof is my guess one or two boards. It isnt the easiest spot to cut into and even there is not too much gap between there and the outside wall.

I do have a dog so i dont know what options there would be with poison.

basically does anyone have any guess/suggestions? will it just die?

edit: i had critter control out to my house the last week of February to inspect my house after hearing a noise, due to a bat getting into the house last year, but the noise only lasted about 5 minutes and then nothing at all and it was in a small area where the, left side of the picture, wall comes up. it is only 3 feet high max and they inspected in there, the entire house, and said everything looked good. the next week i did go through the outside of the house and caulk & silicone all around the house. i had called them yesterday and they want the same $150.00 inspection fee just to come out and wont do anything more to remove it if they dont hear anything so i am kind of screwed since i banged on the wall and ceiling this morning but couldnt get a sound out of it, yet i did that before i went to bed last night too and couldnt get it to make any noise.

what else doesn't make sense is that it seemed all loud and active at varying hours in the beginning and now it's different. i wonder if it was making a nest or something at first and is now coming and going as the last couple nights i have heard it at exactly 1am, give or take 1 minute, sounds like it is moving stuff like siding or falling noises, then stops about 5-10 minutes.

I can't help you but I have had a similar problem. A couple weeks ago I heard something like scratching in the wall between the living and dining rooms. It was off and on for about 30 min then I didn't hear it anymore. A couple nights ago we heard a noise that appeared to be coming from inside the cold air return. Also off and on for 15 min or so and nothing since then.

Two years ago when I removed the furnace filter for cleaning in the fall, a dried out bat carcus was clinging to the filter on the cold air return side. I have checked around the outside and can see no openings.

You should contact a pest control company and ask for a quote on rodent proofing your home. Once they are there follow them around have them show you the potential entry points. (Mice only need a hole the size of a dime and rats the size of quarter) Once they show where to seal go to a home improvement store buy some screen, steel wool, and expansion foam then do it yourself. The inspection should be free as they are going to try and sell you the service.

housemr,

I've been there. I had some kind of critter/rodent in my ceiling a few years ago and it took months before it went away:

I hope you found the source of entry and that the problem has now been taken care of. The noise in my ceiling drove me crazy the whole time. I hope I never have to go through something like that again, and I hope you don't either.
