20 year old heat pump died in Maryland. Want higher SEER (15+) at lowest cost.
Received 3 quotes on a Trane XL15i 1.5 ton heat pump, Trane 2.5 ton 2/4TEE variable speed air handler and a Trane XL900 programmable thermostat. All quotes were installed prices with 10 years parts and labor, all old equipment removed and any duct work, permits included. The range was $6200 to $7000.
Of course, even at the low end it is a lot of money to me. Are they all thieves or does this sound normal?
Thanks in advance for your review/comments.

1st your price range is very close so Id say that is a fair. 2nd that is some major differences in the size of the unit. Was a heat load done?

Why did you get quotes on different tonnages? Are we talking about needing two heat pumps for this residence? If not, your first order of business is to pin down the exact unit size you need, then get quotes from various manufacturers on various models from 13 SEER on up. Why are you set on a 15 SEER unit or higher?

Sorry for my poorly worded specs.
I received 3 quotes, all for the same equipment. That equipment is:
Trane 1.5 ton XL15i (outside)
Trans 2.5 ton 2/4TEE air handler (inside)
Trans XL900 thermostat
