the gap between the end of my new bath tub and tiles is approx 1.5 inches 38mm - what can be done to fill this gap?

I am assuming you did not tear out the walls??? Must have been an old tub, most are now standard dimensions, more or less. Is this a standard 60" tub?? Mud walls or tile over drywall??? If drywall, tear it all out, build it out as needed and do new tile over backerboard. If mud walls, you might center the tub, which would give 3/4" on each end, and box out as best you can. Slant the top of the box so water runs off. Tearing out mud walls is not fun.
