Hi, I connected the R+Y+G wires together and the unit turned on and we had cold air. I read this in an older post. Would you recommend I get a new T- stat? How long can I leave the wires together until it causes problems? Which type would you suggest?
THis site was a great help. Thank you.

If your tstat won't energize your Y and G terminals properly then you'v nailed the problem you have a bad tstat. I would not leave those wires like that unless you really need cooling for before you can replace the tstat.
Due to the sheer volume of online and customer support, folks who know them, and ease of buying their products, I'd go with a Honeywell. If you don't know what model, let us know what you have for heating, cooling, etc. (e.g., heat pump, furnace, A/C only, etc.).
