Here is a photo I what I have going on.

My question is what to use for the transition and how to do it. I was under the impression i leave a 1/2 inch gap for this.
Also, the tile floor is about 1/4 of an inch higher than the hardwood. Will this cause a problem?

A friend was looking at it and suggested I just cut the tile back another inch and put a piece of hardwood in.

Thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You can install a "T" transition of oak in this area. Although you will have a 1/4" difference in height you should be able to install it and let it transition the two. The big box stores and flooring suppliers carry a variety of transitions. I make mine because I can use pieces of the original flooring and have the color match and I don't particularly like some of the transitions out there. Just picky.
