Hi everyone- A tile contractor told me he could put a liner which he described as a waterproof rubber type barrier on the floor of the shower before floating the floor to the drain. This liner would be used instead of hotmopping the shower floor. He also said he would install greenboard on the shower walls and then float the walls. My questions are: 1) is the rubber liner as effective as hotmopping the floor? 2) is installing green
board before floating the walls an effective procedure for floating a shower before tiling it? Thank you very much for helping.

I would suggest that the liner is your best bet for the application.
Also, I would post this question in the tile forum to see what their opinion is.
Personally I try to talk customers into using preformed pans if it is a standard sized location.

I would look at a different contractor.
This guy apprently does not know what he's doing.
There would have to be a mud preslope before the liner per plumbing code. (UPC 412.18, IRC P2709.3)
If you do not have a preslope under the liner, the water that WILL get through the tile and final mud layer will just sit there and not flow towards the drain.
Here's the proper way of floating a shower floor:
Building a shower pan with pre-sloped mortar bed, liner and curb. (http://www.ontariotile.com/preslope.html)
Absolutely NO greenboard in a shower, PERIOD! I would install a cement backerboard on the shower walls after he staples a vapor barrier to the studs.
You must live in Cali area? West coast is the only place I know of that still hot mops.

Same process and material as "hot mopping" a roof.

Thanks Mike,
I kinda figured that is what it would be but was not sure. I know they do that in roofing.
P.S. I would go with the rubber membrane following proper procedures.
