While I was digging a hole for a new tree, I forgot about the one sprinkler head and the shovel separated the entire sprinkler head from the riser pipe (its a black pipe, not the white pvc pipe)
I do not believe the head / unit is damaged, but should I continue to keep digging along the riser pipe (not sure how long it goes for) or is there a way for me to re attach the sprinkler head with some sort of connector?
I tried to look at where the sprinkler head was separated and I can't tell if there is a connector that is threaded which I would need to remove to reuse the head...
Thanks in advance!

Your connector was ruined when you pulled the head out of the ground. Depending on what type of head it is you will need either a 1/2" or 3/4" threaded riser to put the head back in with. Before you run to the store to buy one, finish your digging in case you do any more damage and need a coupler or something else--to save yourself multiple trips.
Look at the bottom of the head and you should see a piece of plastic stuck in the bottom of it. If there is nothing there, then its inside the fitting in the ground. Remove it carefully with pliers and get a new one--reusing this one will allow it to pop off later because the threads that hold it in are now stripped and will not hold for long.
