Doors and Windows - What Would You Do?

We moved into a house that instead of closet doors has curtains covering the closet in the master bedroom. It didn't make sense to me at first, until I realized that the size that the closet doors would need to be is bigger than the standard size... I'm guessing that might be why nobody ever installed doors...

So I'm wondering if custom sized doors are really expensive (and even an option)? Do you guys think it's weird/un-classy to have curtains covering the closet?

What size doors would you need? I don't think it's weird. I probably would remove the curtains & leave the closets completely opened. Who would see it anyway?

How big is the door opening? Perhaps you could use a sliding bi-fold door? Custom fit doors may be expensive, I would also consider re-framing the closet for a standard size door fit.

A sliding door is a good option, but that would also require carpentry work. You should call a couple different door replacement companies and ask for some bids. This could be expensive but there are companies out there who do not try to rip you off. I would not personally hang a curtain up, but thats just me.

Both looks seem to be OK. I watch HGTV and TLC (much to my husband's chagrin), and see shows rip out sliding doors to put in curtains, or to take out curtains to put in doors. I would go with a look that is in your budget and ease of use. I can't stand sliding doors, they always fall off the track for me, but that is just me.

Danny, it's a DIY forums, so we try to encourage people to do things themselves. Once we find out the finished opening, we can offer good advice. I have mismatched bifold doors, say 36" and 30" for an opening around 66"+, and that is a possibility. But, of course, reframing and finishing would be the best, but may not be feasible. We'll wait on the OP to let us know numbers.

Thanks for all the responses! Had to get the measurements from the hubby. He says it's about 77" x 86" ... Basically the problem is that regular doors aren't tall enough, and if we were to "lower" the height of it by adding to it (re-framing), we would lose some access to the closet. And the contents of the closet (including our hampers) are too chaotic to look nice, so leaving it open isn't an option. :-P This room was an addition to the house, so I don't think there were ever doors there...

You might be surprised at the cost of custom sized doors. Don't know whether its your style or not..but mirrored bypass doors were only about $60 more than the standard sizes they were cut down from. Basically, they just have to cut the mirror and the frame to height/width. Of course they CAN be expensive if you get the fancy doors.

A lot depends on what you call expensive. You could probably get basic doors for around $200 or so, or at least, you used to be able to. It's been a while since I priced any..I could be way off.

How about some accordion doors?

I was reading the problem and the dimensions and I thought, why not use swinging doors with a "cap" on top. You could buy the standard size doors and build on a topper cap to make up the height difference. I converted my accordian pantry doors to swinging doors by plate mending the bend in the door and removing the sliding pin and replacing the pin with magnetic catches. I now have all of the access of the pantry and no more lost space due to the folded door. The cap could be a large moulding or something you design yourself.

It depends on what you think you would be willing to spend.Ive attatched a photo of what I would do if it were me but always depends on how much it bothers you.But there are lots of solutions. Custom mirrored Bypass doors for instance are relatively cheap...some where in the area of $200 -$400 per opening installed and custom sizes can be accomodated.
