So I just finished putting up a wood privacy fence on the back line of my property using pressure treated pine. I'm almost done sealing/staining the side that faces my house. My question is do I need to spend the time and money to seal/stain the other side of the fence? The main reason I did it on the side facing me is so I wouldn't have to see it turn grey over the years. Since I used pressure treated lumber, can I get away with not sealing the other side or will the wood start to go bad if I don't seal the other side too?

It will last longer if you coat both sides! PT helps wood to resist weather, rot and decay but if left uncoated it won't last as long as a similiar fence that is well maintained with stain/paint. Don't forget the top edge.

What would you say the difference is in years between a sealed & unsealed pressure treated fence? How long would it last either way. My guess is, I'll never have to replace it, no matter what.

A lot depends on the weather it is subjected too. Here in the S.E. most if not all stockade fences are made with PT lumber. The ones that have a coating well maintained do seem to last forever although I'm sure a close inspection will show signs of wear. The uncoated fences tend to warp more and in places it's not unusual to see the wood crack and/or start to come apart.
To me, the cost of keeping the fence stained is minor compared to the original cost of the fence and future replacement..... but as a painter, I tend to look at the need and looks of keeping everything painted/stained:D

I would rather replace sections of a fence after 20 years instead of 30 & save myself all the work of staining it every year or two.
