We would like to add some dirt to our yard to bring the level up a few inches. We think we will build a short, maybe a foot tall, wall out of these building blocks at Menards. Would it be ok to just put an inch of sand down, then construct the wall?
It will be 2 walls joined by a curved bend. Any advice?

Retaining walls start below grade. Since you only want a foot high, one or two rows below grade would be enough.

Most of the major retaining wall licensing companies (Allan , Anchor Wall Systems, Keystone ans Versalok) have excellent sites with design ideas, installation information and installation tips. These organizations have be laking an marketing their block domestically and internationally for about 20 years. If your local Menards sells on if the those brands you will you will have all the information you need.
If the units are local "knock-offs" block you should try to ask for help from Menards because the installation can vary.
The most omportant thing to to set the block on a compacted base the is level. The natural subsoil should be firm. Never set them on concrete.
