For whatever reason, I'm faced with the following:

Current second floor addition subflooring consists of quarter inch plywood with quarter inch particle board installed on top of that. Joists underneath are 2x12s, 12 inches on center.

I am renovating the room. Assuming I'd like the option of installing hardwood floors at a later date and would prefer to raise the level of the subfloor as little as possible, what's my best option? First thing that crosses my mind would be replace quarter inch particle board with quarter inch plywood, essentially creating a half inch plywood subfloor. Is that the way to go?

Thanks in advance.
