I think you'll need to provide a little more information. What type of existing floor/subfloor? How uneven, and over what distance? i.e. Is it a sag in the floor, or is the existing subfloor buckled? etc.

I'd like an experienced opinion on this too. And how would one determine eveness? I'm about to buy a bag of marbles, fling them to the floor and see where they flow.
Thanks, Liz

You shouldn't be concerned with levelness of the floor but 'flatness.' Is the floor flat enough to not have issues once the laminate is down. To determine this you would take a 6' level and go around the room looking for low points and high points. The next step would be to fill the low points and grind down the high points if needed. manuafacturers will tell you there tolerances.

When I laid my laminate flooring (Torlys), their recommendation is to bring the subfloor up to the flatness specifications - 1/8 inch in 6 feet or 3/16 inch in 10 feet. That is pretty flat!
..The pitch of the floor may be out, but flatness is the main concern.
.
If you can achieve close to that, you're good to go.!!
