Hello readers
In this part of Chicago where I live,its not uncommon for the neighbors house to be 2-3' next to yours.
I'm planning to build a cinder block wall because I plan on also doing some other projects in the future and this wall meets my needs.My neighbor is o.k. with what I plan to do.
In the process of planning and gathering info.,I have some questions regarding the foundation for this 16' wall.I know it has to be poured below the frost line and that it should be 2x the size of the block.I also plan on rebar to strengthen the pour. One person I talked to said that since I'm working with clay dirt,I dont need to pour gravel at the base.Another person recommended using gravel.
I would appreciate any feedback or other suggestions that would be useful.Thanks

Gravel is "dirt cheap".
What does the person that signed on the line for the permit have to say about the soil?
What does the local code say?
The height of the concrete block wall (you cannot buy buy "cinder block" in Chicago) has little to do with the size of the footing, since the bearing capacity of the soil under the footing controls the size.

Just to add here on the good advice above, its against code where I'm from to put ANY crushed stone under a footer. Simply because its not compacted and virgin soil. kind of defeats the footer staying still
