I just bought this yesterday and installed it this morning, and it's not getting gas. I'm not sure what I did wrong, but I've held the pilot button down for a couple of minutes and still no gas. Is there any way for me to check if the valve is letting gas through? It's a old valve that turns, so CCW is opening it and CW is closing it, right?

I had the gas shut off at that valve for a couple of days. Any help?

I can get the model and info if you need it, but I don't think it really has to do with that.

what you did wrong is you bought a whirlpool heater.

get the model and serial numbers, take them to the lowes where you bought it and see if they have the free new burner kit for it. if not then it will cost you shipping and handling but the water heater company will send it to you.

He said he just installed it...don't you think it will have the updated assembly??

Did you hold the control down long time? may take a while to purge the air from the line.

not necessarily. just because they know there is a flaw doesnt mean they will fix it before it ships to the store. they have a known number that were made with the defective design and is why you need the modle and serial numbers.

this is the common complaint for the heaters that need the replacement. if it is not in the recall then it is most likely a bad gas valve (t-stat).

niow i missed the portion of the op's statement that mentioned the position of the gas shut off. depending on what type of shut off it is it may turn 360 deg. in either direction but with the handle or what ever inline with the body it is on and across the body it is off
