I have a DC987 that recently started smoking out of the vents. I can see it sparking inside and it smells terrible! Is there any hope of repairing this?

It could also be shorting out inside due to foreign matter that got inside the motor housing via the vent holes.

Does it also sound differently... like there is gravel in the gears perhaps?
