I have an existing wire fence mounted on old T-shaped metal stakes set in concrete. I would like to remove the wire and use the stakes to build a new wooden privacy fence (simple runners and pickets). The stakes are about 5' apart and 4' high and I would like to make the new fence 6' high.

I'm looking for suggestions on how to utilize the existing stakes as the posts for the new fence. I'm having trouble coming up with a sturdy and lasting solution.

Thanks for your input!

T-Stakes... Are these those green stakes that people use to hang Turkey wire on? If I recall they have small hooks from bottom to top , they have a small anchor like spear in the ground?

If this is the same type of post, it would be somewhat pliable . If this is correct, I would say you can not use those types of posts to support any type of solid wood fence.

If I am wrong with my assumption and you are speaking about a solid type of T post , more commonly used for wood fencing I would think that just removing the old fence and using the existing posts to support your new fence would still work . In this you would be connecting your fence, the bottom and mid rails to the posts. The posts would be short, but I believe that if you wish to reuse the old posts and they are secure, you could use them without being tied in on top.
\Those posts being secure is the main goal though. If they are not secure in the slightest way, I would suggest replacing them .
If you are going to look at this fence directly, or if your neighbor has to look at that side of the fence that the posts are on, I would suggest replacing the posts. It is not likely you would find a post that would sleeve over the existing T-Posts while still being cost efficient enough to bother doing.

At the same time... If you are an experienced welder, you could always buy more posts of the same sort.. cut them to give you the extra height and weld them onto the existing posts. Again, much consideration goes into the type of fence you are looking to hold up, the wind conditions that the fence would have to endure and the secureness of the existing posts and their cemented bases..

Good luck , I Hope that helps...
