I haven't seen the job yet but someone called me about replacing a formica counter top. He says it's glued to exterior plywood. The back splash is tile, so I don't have to change that. I suppose I can use the old counter top as a template. I know how to remove the sink.

My main question is: Should I even attempt to separate the old top from the plywood?

Are there any other tricks of the trade I should know first?

I would get a sawzall with a long flexible blade. Just take your time and put the blode between the countertop and cabinets.

I have a sawzall with "The Ax" blades. That's not a problem. Since you said between the cabinets & counter top, I guess you're saying not to try to separate the counter top from the plywood. Is that correct?
