I want to make my own Grill Island. Does anyone have any idea on where to find a guide to building one? I went to Lowes and they just have books with what they look like. Simple looking for how to lay the foundation of one and what materials are needed for it. I know they all can be different but they all have the same kind of ideal structure to them. Thanks.

Hi Rtminer,
Sounds like you want to build an outdoor kitchen of sorts. Take a look at these plans to see if they will be helpful.

If it's a bbq or bbq pit you want to make I also have sites for those. Of course you can do a google search with those terms. :)

This episode link is helpful, thanks.
I'm also planning the same type of project; outdoor built-in grill island, roughly 2.5x7 ft. So far I have the grill, field stone for the walls and granite for the top on both sides of the grill. The field stone was removed from our house during an addition being done and I'd like to put it up as "veneer" for this island but these are whole stones. I've done some searches for some info on this construction, but most pertain to retaining walls; I'm thinking more along the lines as the this episode link of building 2x4 walls with plywood and then cement board. Any tips for the building the stone wall part from there?
Also this will be going adjacent to my cement patio, because of the weight of the stone what type of base should this be put on, a cement slab? If so, just a 4-6 in. stone base & 4 in. slab? Should it be thicker around the perimeter?
Any thoughts/suggestions are appreciated.
