Doors and Windows - How to Determine Manufacturer

How do I determine the manufacturer of a door? I have looked all over the door, except for the bottom, and I don't see anything that would indicate the manufacturer. It is a metal exterior kitchen entry door.

Some brands may have a stamp, label, or impression under one of the hinge leafs. Normally but not always, the middle leaf on the door side.

What about a sliding patio door?

Those can be pretty tough. Even good quality sliders can be hard to figure out. Almost everyone I've seen (before it was installed) had labels..but they were all on the BACK of the frame, not visible once installed.

Why do you need to know btw? Most cheaper doors use generic parts and hardware.

I had the kitchen door and sliding door installed about 10-11 years ago. I've lost the paperwork. They were expensive ($3K at the time). The sweep of the kitchen door is now tearing, and will need to be repaired.

Most door sweeps use limited styles. Some slide into a track, some fit into grooves on the bottom of the door and are stapled in place. Once you take it out, you should be able to go to a good local hardware store and they will be able to find a replacement.

There can be a few that are hard to find, since they may have changed styles or been bought out. If you have a problem locally, come back here and post a pic of the sweep, someone will have an answer.

I looked under the middle hinge of the kitchen door. This is what it had:

The "?" are where I couldn't make it out.

Do any of these numbers indicate the manufacturer?

Well, I can decipher some of it...but not the maker..sorry..

Others may have some more clues...but as I said..shouldn't be a problem getting what you need.

Where are you located? Stanley had a plant in NC before they were bought out by Masonite. They were probably the most common brand in the mid-atlantic region .

I am in Mount Airy, Maryland.

The contractor was located in Frederick, Md. at the time - I don't remember the name of the company and they are not located where they were 10 years ago, if they are still in business. My wife says that the owner's last name was Eby.

I've done several Google searches, but with no success.

When I Google "210544 door" it comes up as Kwikset Grade 2 security entry knob locking door knob with Smart Key cylinder

Since you are in MD, it could one of several...Stanley, Masonite (almost identical), Peachtree, and a few more that escape me. I could tell by looking at the sweep, but I'm not ready for that long a roadtrip...lol

You'll find it..prob about $10.


EDIT Yeah, that number could be an internal factory number or something....

Oh, and if you haven't, and want to go to the trouble, you might check under the other leafs.

The other leafs didn't have anything under them.

On the sliding door.....is there a window or glass panel? Sometimes the manufacturer name is on the metal frame that surrounds the glass. Usually printed or embossed in.

No luck. It's a glass panel and I just looked (and felt) around the metal frame.
