I'm about to replace my indoor wood railings after putting down hard wood floor. The question is, where do I position the newel post? Are there code guidelines for the distance from the edge of the floor, edge of the first thread? Do I just eye-ball it?
Thanks!

You can place your newel at the last riser but the exact location isn't critical. Depending upon the framing underneath, I often let that determine where exactly my newel post will go, since I want to mount it into something solid. When laying out your balusters, if you have an iPhone or iTouch, there is a cool app called BalusterPro to calculate your spacing easily for you. You can see it at www.gabrioconstruction.com
Good luck!
