We have had Orkin service every month and then cut back to for 6 months a yr for the 17 yrs we lived in our old stone house. Once about 10 yrs ago Orkin saw some sub. termites coming through the aggregate stone floor, but they had wings then and then disappeared and then I never saw them again, or any evidence they had done any damage. (The house is made of river rock stone and is on a stone slab.) We are renting the house now because we bought another house and moved and I just saw some dirt and the beige colored bugs that look like worms in a crack in the sunroom aggregate stone floor. I am guessing that they are some form of the sub. termites because they are coming up in the same place as before. I took a sample and brought it to our new house but left it in the car in a covered canister so we can take it somewhere for identification. We discontinued the Orkin last May 2008 when we planned to move so I wonder if that service was something I should have kept, or if it is just a coincidence that I am seeing the sub termites again after so many years? Also I am wondering if they surfaced because nobody has been living there for 4 months and the weather suddenly got warm and humid? I am wondering if I should try to treat them myself with the Bayer method or if I should be concerned at all. I cannot afford to pay big bucks for a pest control company, but maybe I should back to Orkin monthly service for 6 months of the yr if that would take care of it. Maybe I should call the State Dept. of Agriculture for advice because I don't really trust the pest control companies since they are always using scare tactics and trying to sell their services. I went over there again yesterday and it looks like most of the worms have gone back down. I have heard that they don't like to be disturbed. The new tenant knows a lot about construction and he said he saw no evidence of any termite damage or that they had been above ground. He also said our house does not have the kind of wood they eat, as it is mostly river rock and some cedar siding and has a stone slab for a foundation. He says we don't need to worry, and that he can seal the cracks in the aggregate stone in our sunroom where we saw them. I am a woorier, but m:confused:aybe I should just not worry so much.
Thanks, Susan

Swarmers are just one caste of the termite family. The workers are the ones you don't see and they do the damage. Nothing you've done caused them and I'm not sure what other bug you saw but sub termites travel in mud tubes so it may be another bug just by coincidence. Prices for termite work have come down lately and about the only thing you can do yourself is 'bait' but they still can run into hundreds of dollars and is labor intensive in that you have to check the bait alot. Just because the swarm has gone doesn't mean the workers have. They'll continue all year long hidden away. By the description I would suggest calling in someone with the tools and know how. Stone slabs, veneer and the like can be very difficult even for the pros. Insist on Termidor or Premise either one and you should be fine. For more information you can look at your options and see which way you want to go. Look at Termites: To bait or not to bait | Pest Cemetery (http://pestcemetery.com/termites-bait-bait/)
There are several other articles with pics so you can verify what you have and be ready when and if you get estimates.
Also, the Orkin man wwas doing 'pest control' which has little or no effect on termites. He was doing his job I'm sure but you'll need a termite technician not a pest technician for this one.

Good Luck

I was told our house has dry wood termites about a year ago. I can definitly see evidence of them. The inspector told me we would have to tent our house to be sure we got rid of them all. Is the vikane gas safe, and how long does it take termites to do real damage. I just don't like the idea of fumigation.
